The foundation stone of Saligao Church was laid in 1867, and the church was inaugurated in November 1873. Built by the local Catholic community, it was designed by Goan architect Jeronimo Gomes and modeled on the Neo-Gothic style, reflecting both Portuguese and British influences. The church was constructed to serve as a new parish for Saligao, and its name—“Mae De Deus”—means “Mother of God.”
