The origins of St Alex Church date back to 1597, when the Franciscans established the first chapel here, built simply from palm leaves along the seashore. The present church structure, with its elegant white domes and towers, was completed by villagers in 1741. Over the centuries, the church has been expanded and renovated, with the sanctuary rebuilt in 1916 and the towers added in 1765. Originally dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, the church was rededicated to St. Alex by an Apostolic Brief in 1815.
